Soul Edge Life-Size Replica Will Consume Your Soul. And Your Shoulders and Your Back.

Artist and cosplayer Casy Kovach chose to go as Nightmare from SoulCalibur 5 for this year’s Dragon Con. Short of hiring Tony Swatton, Kovach went to great lengths to create a Soul Edge replica worthy of its videogame counterpart.

soul edge replica by casy kovach

The base of the sword’s blade was carved from a board of insulating foam. Casy carved the board to match the shape of Soul Edge’s blade then added fiberglass to its outer edge. Then he used lots of Model Magic as well as hot glue to replicate the muscles and flesh covering the blade. He used a plastic sphere from a toy for Soul Edge’s eyes. Finally he painstakingly painted and buffed the blade. He worked on it on and off over 7 months, but the result is worth it.

Casy estimates that the blade alone weighs about 15lbs, but it sure looks like it weighs more than that. He used plumbing pipes as the sword’s handle but eventually he had to add a few ankle weights as well to give the sword a more sensible center of gravity. This is just the sword; imagine when he’s wearing Nightmare’s armor. He’s going to be a statue at Dragon Con.

deviantART member/miner/crafter AwesomeTikiWiki made this Minecraft sword plushie as “a present of sorts.” I think she gave it to someone she hated, because this sword won’t help anyone defeat even a pixelated chicken.

Sabertron Swords Keep Players Honest By Keeping Score

I have always thought swords were pretty cool. In fact, I used to take fencing, if only because no one taught kendō in my area. If you have ever picked up a stick and started a mock sword fight with someone, you know that your foes tend to become liars quickly. Even if their knuckles are bleeding, they will deny being hit by your sword/stick.

sabertrontbmagnify

Sabertron is working on a new sword fighting system that takes away the ability for your opponent to lie in this way. The swords keep track of hits and can tell the difference between a person and another sword. According to its makers:

Sabertron uses wireless communications to determine when two swords have clashed. If a player strikes the ground, the microcontroller can ignore the strike because the sword is tilted down at an angle. If a player strikes a tree, a bystander, or the player’s self, the microcontroller will detect those objects as the opponent. This is a limitation and players must agree to be honest. This limitation will be removed in follow-on products that support Melee Mode, by utilizing proximity detection circuits. It is possible that the initial reward product supports this mode, depending on the production changes to bring Sabertron to the masses, but is not guaranteed.

Each sword comes complete with sound effects and LED lights that count down the points until victory or defeat. Initially, you’ll only be able to get versions looks like a lightsaber, but if they should exceed $500,000 in orders, they’ll also offer a medieval blade. Down the road, they hope to release accessories that allow for multiplayer melee battles.

If you want a pair, you’ll need to pledge at least $125(USD) over on Kickstarter to get in on the sword-swinging action when they launch. Delivery is estimated for Fall 2014.

Adventure Time Grass Sword Replica: I’m Cool with That

If you watch Adventure Time, you know that Finn the Human has a cool sword made of grass. When he got it, he could not get it off his arm. The grass just wrapped itself around his hand. It was a trap set by the Grassy Wizard. Here is a real life prop of the sword that looks just as cool.

It may have been a trap, but it was a real kick butt sword, so Finn just said, “You know what? I think I’m cool with that.” Sometimes when you have a totally awesome sword, you just have to accept its quirks.

This acrylic and plastic replica comes from Etsy seller ThePropShop for just $65(USD). The question is, will you be able to put it down after you get it?

Man at Arms Makes Jake’s Sword from Adventure Time

I’m not sure why a shape-shifting dog even needs a sword, but that’s Adventure Time for you. It doesn’t have to make sense to be an amazing cartoon. As you might expect, this sword is totally mathematical! It was made by none other than our favorite blacksmith, Tony “Man at Arms” Swatton.

jakes sword adventure time 620x363magnify

The swords in Adventure Time all have their quirks. Jake’s weapon is no exception. Look how long that hilt is. You could never use this sword in real life. That didn’t stop master swordsmith Tony Swatton from making it real. Watch as he first makes Jake’s sword, then uses it to destroy stuff.

It really is beautiful and it looks like it came right out of the cartoon. As usual, Great work, Tony!

Jon Snow’s Longclaw Sword Gets Forged for Real

Man at Arms’ Tony Swatton has forged many great fantasy weapons, bringing them into our world and making them real. This time around, thanks to many requests, he has made Jon Snow’s Longclaw sword from Game of Thrones. You know nothing, Jon Snow, but you do have a kick-ass sword.

john snow 2 620x493magnify

I don’t know how many swords Tony has made by this point (no pun intended), but by now he could probably make himself an actual Iron Throne with all of them.

As usual, the finished sword looks pretty amazing, and even has the same intricate direwolf head pommel at the end of its hilt. You can see it in action at the end of the video.

Jon Snow would be so proud. Now I wonder if Tony Swatton has ever worked in Valerian steel…

Attack on Titan 3D Maneuver Gear Replica is Ready to Slice Necks

YouTuber らってん技研 recently finished a replica of the Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear used by the good guys in the hit manga and anime series Shingeki no Kyojin, aka Attack on Titan. It can’t be used to swing about, but it does come with fairly sharp steel blades.

attack on titan shingeki no kyojin 3d maneuver gear replica by joshualawn 2magnify

Aside from the blade, the pistol-style hilt is also mostly made of metal. The rest of the gear is mostly made of plywood and PVC pipe. Just like in Attack on Titan, the blade can be detached by pulling the lever on the hilt.

Fans of the show may have noticed that the blades are not segmented like the ones used in the series. From what I understand, らってん技研 opted not to put grooves on the blades to make them look segmented because doing so could break the blades. It’s not like they’re going to be jammed in Titan flesh anyway.

In the video below, らってん技研 shows how he designed the blade. He also demonstrates the hilt’s locking mechanism and slices some vegetables with the blade.

らってん技研  is accepting commissions for the replica. Contact him on YouTube or send a message to fullmetal.shingeki[at]gmail.com to order.

Diablo III fans will recognize this sword prop right away. It’s El’Druin – The Sword of Justice – and it was designed directly from the digital art files for the game. That means it looks like the one Tyrael uses to flay baddies in the game.

The thing measures over three feet long. Sadly, it’s made of plastic that is hand-painted to look like metal, but on the other hand that means it doesn’t weigh 20 pounds. The replica has a pulsating blue light in the hilt that looks all fancy and sh*t.

Legend says that when this My Little Pony sword with cutie mark is pulled from the stone, they will have found their king…or Queen. The problem is that ponies only have hooves, so no one can remove the sword from the stone. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

This sword was made by DeviantART member jablechien and it also sports the traditional icon of Princess Luna, which was expertly applied using acrylic paint and a toothpick.

It would be so cool if they had weapons in My Little Pony. Your father wanted you to have this. It is an elegant pony weapon from a more civilized pony age.

A Real Heron Marked Sword from Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time turns and ages come and go… The Wheel of Time is a series of 14 fantasy novels by Robert Jordan. If you have never read them, you are really missing out. After he died in 2007, Brandon Sanderson finished the last three books in the series. Fans will be pleased to see this Heron marked blade from it’s pages come to life.

heronzoom in

In the books, the greatest swordsmen are called Blademasters. That name means that they can carry Heron marked blades as a sign of their skill. You don’t mess with someone who carries one of these swords, because you will not win. And now an authentic and beautiful Heron marked blade exists in real life. Brendan Olszowy, a swordsmith in Western Australia, actually forged one.

heron1zoom in

In fact it is the sword of Moraine’s Warder, al’Land Mandragoran. It weighs 2 pounds, 14 ounces and the blade is 32.2 inches long. It is inscribed with words from the Old Tongue that translate to “True Blood of Manatheren” and “For the glory of the Red Eagle.” I would love to hang this sword in my home and brag to all my nerd friends.

Replica One Piece Swords Available in Japan

I’ll admit to having never read or watched any of the One Piece manga and anime series. It really doesn’t matter because I am a sucker for sweet katana swords and have been way before The Walking Dead featured one so prominently.

Whether you’re a fan of One Piece, or just like cool weapons, you might want to get your hands on these replica swords that look like the ones the people in the series use. They are pretty awesome; I particularly like the simple black one that has the black and silver blade, it’s awesome. My least favorite is the one with the fuzzy guard.

These swords aren’t cheap, the most expensive one is the Sandai Kitetsu and sells for 99,800 yen (~$934 USD), that sword is the black handle with gold trimmings and silver blade. The white with gold one, and the sweet black blade sword each sell for about $747.

Robot Arms Dueling with Katana: Apocalypse Soon

$

When we all die, it will certainly be a preventable doom of our own making. If I were placing bets I’d probably go with “catastrophic environmental disaster,” but “robot apocalypse” is certainly a possibility, and the odds just went up… a LOT. Why, you ask? Robots arms that have been taught to wield katana with unerring precision.

robots_with_katanazoom in

Now we know that when the robots rise up against us we will be cut down with differentially tempered swords made in the Japanese style. The consolation prize is that we’ll probably die quickly from the very, very precise and clean cuts.

In the mean time, I’ll be working on a design for an EMP warhammer. Do you think Kickstarter or Indiegogo would be a better funding platform for such a weapon? Should early backers get a free upgrade to fine Nappa leather grips? Maybe if I hit stretch goals I can also make EMP maces, flails, estocs, and halberds.

This is a fun video that shows Inspire to Make creating a tiny little sword. And before you laugh and say that it can’t hurt anyone, just remember that even needles can kill if inserted in the right area, and splinters hurt like hell. Size matters not.

It is a cute little weapon worthy of any small warrior who has the heart to wield it in battle.

DIY Hobbit Sting Sword Glows Near Unsecured Wi-Fi Networks: Whitehat Baggins

The magical dagger Sting protected Bilbo from evil creatures and glowed blue when there were orcs nearby. But WarSting, Spark IO’s modern take on Sting, provides a more timely warning. It will glow when there are unsecured wireless networks nearby.

hobbit-sting-wi-fi-sword-warsting-by-spark-iozoom in

WarSting is an offshoot of Spark IO’s WarKitteh, the Wi-Fi sniffing cat. They modified a toy Sting that had LEDs, a speaker and a motion sensor. They then spliced in their Spark Core chip and reprogrammed it to detect unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

hobbit-sting-wi-fi-sword-warsting-by-spark-io-2zoom in

They also made it so that if you swing WarSting, it will join and store the name of the unsecured network to a Spark Cloud account, then disconnect from it. It will then stop glowing if there are no other unsecured networks. Otherwise, you can keep swinging until you’ve marked all free rides to the Internet innocent networks.

Your browser senses a link nearby. Head to Spark IO’s website to find out how you can make a WarSting.

If you are a huge Lord of the Rings fan, you might know the Anduril Flame of the West sword and its significance. If you like the movies but aren’t a super fan you might not. This sword was used in the battle against Sauron and cut the ring of power from the hand of Sauron.

What you see here is a replica of that sword and if you have any visions of cutting evil hands you are out of luck, as this sword is dull on both edges. The blade of the sword is made from 420 J2 stainless steel with runes etched into the sides, and it will take an edge if you want a sharp object.

The sword comes with a wooden display plaque for hanging on the wall and a certificate of authenticity. The matching scabbard is made from real leather and has a 24k gold-plated finish. The sword goes for $179.99(USD) and the scabbard will set you back another $129.99 at ThinkGeek.

Walking Dead Zombie & Sword Letter Opener Set

$

One of my favorite characters on The Walking Dead is Michonne. I like her because she uses a sword to slice and dice zombies rather than a gun. If you are besieged with a bunch of slow zombies, I think a sharp Katana sword might be the best way to kill a hoard. I would want guns too though.

wd-letter-1zoom in

This is an official Walking Dead letter opener that opens sealed envelopes much in the same way Michonne dispatches the undead. While it doesn’t quite look like Michonne’s katana, it does look like a sword, and it’s sharp enough to use to open letters. That probably means the blade is completely dull and you simply use it to rip open the top of a letter.

wd-letter-2zoom in

The sword sticks into the rotting skull of a walker and looks awesome. I particularly like that you can see the sword in the mouth of the zombie. The sword is 11.5″ long and the zombie base is 13″ (H) x 4.5″ (W) x 3.5″ (D). You can get your letter opener for $89.99(USD) at ThinkGeek.
